Beliefs

Our Church is governed first and foremost by the word of God and we believe that scripture is the infallible and inspired word of God Almighty, wherein we find his revealed will for the conduct of our lives and for the salvation of souls. We also hold to the 1689 Baptist confession of faith. Put simply our beliefs can be summarised by the three ‘R’s: Ruin by the fall, Redemption through Jesus Christ and Regeneration by the Holy Spirit.

We use grace hymns as our main hymn book, supplemented by a Psalter and a collection of other hymns put together by the Church Deacon and pianist. We believe in simplicity in worship, that our minds might be fully focused in reverence and in godly fear on our Heavenly Father.

Above all we believe in the Trinity of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and we believe that God has called us out of the world, saved us through the grace offered in the person of his Son through his death on the cross and resurrection from the grave and our purpose on earth  as his people is to with the aid of the indwelling spirit, praise his name and enjoy him forever.

History

Bellevue Baptist Church was first formed in 1969 by a group of pioneering Americans and met on Princes Street in a rented room. In 1974, the Church bought the Catholic Apostolic Hall at the bottom of Broughton Street. Eventually, repair costs on the building soared and in 1992, the building was sold and the Church moved to new premises in the hall attached to the back of the Headquarters of the Edinburgh City Mission on Arthur’s Street. We stayed here until 2003 and then we moved to St Mary’s Parish Hall in Gayfield Square. This building met our needs wonderfully until 2007 when we moved back to the newly renovated Edinburgh City Mission Hall. In 2011, the hall was sold to the Free Church Continuing, but the Lord’s goodness continued to follow us and we moved upstairs in the main building on the Mission in what we call the upper room. For 42 years, Bellevue Baptist Church has been an example of the Lord’s mercy and provision and we believe that he will continue to guide us and provide for us in the present day.
